Schedule

Friday

Meet us - Friday, August 16 at 8 pm at the Hampton Inn - 2219 Bedell Avenue Del Rio, TX 78840

We will divide into teams and assign tasks.

We will talk about the volunteers from Mexico who will accompany us.

We will check passports, pack items that we are taking across the border, answer your questions.


Saturday

  • 8 am - leave the Hampton Inn parking lot for the colonia (you do NOT need to drive into Mexico)
  • 8:30 -10- walk a colonia, meet families and distribute food
  • 10:30 - 11:30 visit a children's shelter
  • Noon- 1 pm - lunch (cost is about $8)
  • 1:15 pm- 2 pm Shop for more food to distribute
  • 2:15 pm - 3 15 pm distribute food and meet more families
  • 3:30 pm - 4 pm Set up for fiesta - Special Needs Children
  • 4:pm- 7 pm Children fiesta - shared meal with kids - face painting, games, dances, contests for kids award prizes.

Sunday

  • 8am - leave the Hampton Inn parking lot for the colonia (you do NOT need to drive into Mexico)
  • hospital visit, shelter visit
  • noon Lunch in Mexico and final discussions
  • 1:30 pm return to cross the bridge and your drive home begins

Cost

Book your room anywhere in Del Rio and pay for your room and meals while on the trip. We provide transportation to Acuna, Mexico (about 10 minutes from the Hampton Inn. Donations to Paper Houses are always appreciated.

FAQ

Why doesn't Paper Houses book rooms at one location?

Some people like to share rooms and some people have membership at hotel chains. Bob will be at the Hampton and it is easier in some ways if you book there, but as long as you meet us on the parking lot no later than 8 am, please feel free to stay where you like.

What is the minimum age of participants?

At this time, the minimum age is 15 and if both parents are not participating, a notarized letter is required by Mexican Law from the absent parent. The letter must state that the child has permission to enter Mexico between August 16 and August 18th. (email us for details)

Are there dress requirement? Yes!

No message clothing and nothing inappropriate. Comfortable shoes. We will be walking in the sun (or rain) and some of the hills are steep. Leave the jewelry at home. We do not want to give the wrong impression or attract attention.

Is Mexico safe??

Acuna is often called the safest city on the border. Bob has traveled with his grandchildren in the colonias and since 2001, when we first began, we've never had an incident.

What should I bring?

Sun screen, sun glasses, insect repellent, lip balm, a current U.S. Passport, comfortable walking shoes. Most men in Mexico do not wear shorts.

 

Do I need to speak Spanish?

No. We always have translators.

Can I bring gifts for the children or people we meet?

No more than $50 of items per person can be taken into Mexico without being delayed and paying taxes. If you bring things, bring a receipt. If they were donated, send us an email so we can give you an easy way to bring those items.
